Establishing a Foundation: Implementing the Repository Pattern from Day One

Starting a new project often feels like standing in front of a blank canvas. When beginning work on the SantiagoBruna95 project, my primary goal was to establish a clean, maintainable architecture that would allow the codebase to scale without becoming brittle. One of the first decisions made was the adoption of the Repository Pattern.

Why the Repository Pattern?

Think of the Repository Pattern as a professional library system. Instead of wandering through the stacks yourself to find a specific book (or in our case, data), you speak to the librarian. The librarian knows exactly where the data lives—whether it is in a SQL database, an external API, or an in-memory cache—and retrieves it for you. Your application doesn't need to know the 'how' of data retrieval; it only needs to know the 'what'.

The Implementation Strategy

By decoupling the data access layer from the business logic, we ensure that changing the underlying database engine in the future won't require a rewrite of our services. Here is how we structure the abstraction:

interface IDataRepository<T> {
  findById(id: string): Promise<T | null>;
  save(item: T): Promise<void>;
}

class SqlDataRepository implements IDataRepository<User> {
  async findById(id: string): Promise<User | null> {
    // Implementation logic for database query
  }
}

In this example, the service layer depends only on the IDataRepository interface. This allows us to swap SqlDataRepository for a MockDataRepository during testing, making our test suites faster and more reliable.

The Technical Lesson

Implementing patterns early is not about over-engineering; it is about creating 'seams' in your code. By creating these seams, you make it significantly easier to refactor, test, and adapt the system as requirements evolve. It turns a monolithic data handling logic into a modular component.

The Takeaway

Don't let data access logic leak into your business services. Define clear interfaces for your data needs today, and you will find it significantly easier to swap, test, or upgrade your storage layers tomorrow.
